六岁那年,我曾在一本关于原始森林的书——书名为《真实自然故事》中,看到了一副堪称壮观的插图。这幅插图描绘的是一条巨蟒正在吞食一只野生动物的场景,如下图:
书中写道:巨蟒会把他们的猎物整个囫囵吞下,之后他们会一直无法动弹,并且休眠长达6个月的时间来消化猎物。
后来,我认真的设想了丛林里的冒险,并用彩色铅笔画下了我的第一幅画,我的号图画。它是这个样子的:
然后,我把我的杰作拿给大人们看,并问他们有没有被这幅画吓到,可他们却回答道:“吓到?怎么有人会被一顶帽子吓到?”
我画的并不是一顶帽子,而是一条巨蟒,正在消化吞到肚子里的大象。不过,由于大人们都无法理解这幅画,我又画了一幅:我把这条巨蟒的内部画了出来。这样,大人们就能看得更清晰了。他们总是需要一些解释说明之类的东西……我的2号图画是这个样子的:
这一次,大人们的反应则是建议我放下巨蟒的图画,不论是轮廓还是它的内部,把注意力集中到地理、历史、数学和语法之类的上面去。这就是6岁那年,我便放弃了可能成为一名画家这一伟大职业的来龙去脉。号图画和2号图画的失败让我深感沮丧。大人们永远无法理解,而对孩子们来说,不断地向大人们进行解释说明更是一件很烦人的事情。
于是我选择了另一门职业,我去学习驾驶飞机。我几乎飞遍了世界的每个角落。对我而言,地理知识也确实是大有用处:只用瞄一眼,我就能分辨出中国和亚利桑那。如果在晚上迷了路,这类知识也能派上用场。
在这段人生经历中,我遇到过许多严肃认真的人,也曾在大人人群中生活,和他们亲密无间,近距离的观察过他们。尽管如此,也没能改变多少我对他们的看法。
每次我遇到一位在我看来头脑稍微清醒点的大人时,我都会把一直保存着的号图画给他看,试图以此来确认对方是否能够真正理解。不过很遗憾,不论是谁,他或她们的答案永远是:“这是一顶帽子。”
之后,我就再也不会和对方谈及巨蟒、原始森林和浩瀚星辰。我会把自己降到他的层次,和他聊大桥、高尔夫、政治和领结之类的话题。而大人们也会因为遇到了一个明智的人而倍感高兴。

Mydrawingwasnotapictureofahat.Itwasapictureofaboaconstrictordigestinganelephant.Butsincethegrown-upswerenotabletounderstandit,Imadeanotherdrawing:Idrewtheinsideoftheboaconstrictor,sothatthegrown-upscouldseeitclearly.Theyalwaysneedtohavethingsexplained.MyDrawingNumberTwolookedlikethis:
Thegrown-ups‘response,thistime,wastoadvisemetolayasidemydrawingsofboaconstrictors,whetherfromtheinsideortheoutside,anddevotemyselfinsteadtogeography,history,arithmeticandgrammar.Thatiswhy,attheageofsix,Igaveupwhatmighthavebeenamagnificentcareerasapainter.IhadbeendisheartenedbythefailureofmyDrawingNumberOneandmyDrawingNumberTwo.Grown-upsneverunderstandanythingbythemselves,anditistiresomeforchildrentobealwaysandforeverexplainingthingstothem.
SothenIchoseanotherprofession,andlearnedtopilotairplanes.Ihaveflownalittleoverallpartsoftheworld?anditistruethatgeographyhasbeenveryusefultome.AtaglanceIcandistinguishChinafromArizona.Ifonegetslostinthenight,suchknowledgeisvaluable.InthecourseofthislifeIhavehadagreatmanyencounterswithagreatmanypeoplewhohavebeenconcernedwithmattersofconsequence.Ihavelivedagreatdealamonggrown-ups.Ihaveseenthemintimately,closeathand.Andthathasn‘tmuchimprovedmyopinionofthem.
WheneverImetoneofthemwhoseemedtomeatallclear-sighted,ItriedtheexperimentofshowinghimmyDrawingNumberOne,whichIhavealwayskept.Iwouldtrytofindout,so,ifthiswasapersonoftrueunderstanding.But,whoeveritwas,he,orshe,wouldalwayssay:"Thatisahat."ThenIwouldnevertalktothatpersonaboutboaconstrictors,orprimevalforests,orstars.Iwouldbringmyselfdowntohislevel.Iwouldtalktohimaboutbridge,andgolf,andpolitics,andneckties.Andthegrown-upwouldbegreatlypleasedtohavemetsuchasensibleman.
