OncewhenIwassixyearsoldIsawamagnificent(壮丽的)picture(图画)inabook,calledTrueStoriesfromNature(自然),abouttheprimeval(原始的)forest(森林).Itwasapictureofaboaconstrictor(大蟒蛇)intheactofswallowing(吞下)ananimal.Hereisacopy(复制品)ofthedrawing(图画).
Inthebookitsaid:“Boaconstrictorsswallowtheirprey(猎物)whole(整个),withoutchewing(咀嚼)it.Afterthattheyarenotabletomove,andtheysleepthroughthesixmonthsthattheyneedfordigestion(消化).”

ThenIwouldnevertalktothatpersonaboutboaconstrictors,orprimevalforests,orstars.Iwouldbringmyselfdowntohislevel.Iwouldtalktohimaboutbridge,andgolf(高尔夫),andpolitics(政治),andneckties(领带).Andthegrown-upwouldbegreatly(极大地)pleasedtohavemetsuchasensible(理智的)man.
